UPDATE:

WOW! A Power Line reader sent them a flash anmimation of the actual overlay between the document CBS is claiming is authentic and one typed in MS Word 2002 in Palantino Linotype font.

UPDATE:

deacon @ Power Line is now posting more info regarding Marcel Matley – the man that CBS says verified the authenticity of the memos. As it turns out, he wrote in the September 27, 2002 issue of “The Practical Litigator”:

“In fact, modern copiers and computer printers are so good that they permit easy fabrication of quality forgeries. From a copy, the document examiner cannot authenticate the unseen original but may well be able to determine that the unseen original is false. Further, a definite finding of authenticity for a signature is not possible from a photocopy, while a definite finding of falsity is possible.”

So, the guy that verified the authencity of CBS’ memos by using a copy of who knows how many copies of a document said you should never do that.

As Jim Geraghty says at NRO’s Kerry Spot:

“Actually, it appears CBS no longer has any witnesses backing up its case.
RatherBiased.com notes that Robert Strong told the New York Times that he does not believe that his former associate [Jerry Killian] used a proportional font typewriter during his time in the Texas guard. “‘I’m skeptical that Killian was working on that,’ Mr. Strong said.”
Now we also hear that in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Marcel B. Matley, CBS’ document examiner “said he had only judged a May 4, 1972, memo — in which Killian ordered Bush to take his physical — to be authentic. He said he did not form a judgment on the three other disputed memos because they only included Killian’s initials and he did not have validated samples of the officer’s initials to use for comparison.”
The sole remaining individual cited in CBS’s report is author Jim Moore, who Rather said, “has written two books critical of President Bush and his service in the Guard.” Moore, however, simply asserts that the documents are real and that the lack of a White House statement discrediting the documents (yet) shows that “the White House probably knows that these documents are, in fact, real.”
Uh, no. That statement is meaningless. By that standard, I can assert that the fact that Ed Bradley, Mike Wallace, Morley Safer and the rest of the Sunday 60 Minutes crew haven’t come to defend Rather means they “probably know that these documents are, in fact, fake, and so badly done that a third-grader could recognize the differences between a document created with a typewriter and one created on a modern computer, and that Rather has gone cuckoo for cocoa puffs.”
Right now, the camp that believes the documents are the real deal consists of Dan Rather, Jim Moore, Tom Harkin, and possibly Terry McAuliffe, although the DNC head also apparently thinks Karl Rove did it.”

Does CBS News and Dan Rather really think they can stop this snowball from rolling over them?

The absolute best visual demonstration comparing MS Word produced documents vs. what Dan Rather put out on CBS.

3 Pentagon Officials Say CBS Memos Are Fake

September 11th, 2004 Comments off

Just reported on Weekend Live with Tony Snow, 3 current Pentagon officials have said the documents provided to CBS News for their 60 Minutes II report that alleged President Bush ignored a direct order, ARE FAKES.

Of course, the Dimocrats will claim that the Pentagon is mereley a tool of the Bush administration, we’ll see.

More and more outlets in the MSM are coming out and calling the documents fake so at this point I would think it will help that the Pentagon thinks so too.

UPDATE:

Power Line is now confirming Fox News stories (as noted earlier today) that 3 Pentagon sources are saying that the documents are fake. Fox News seems to be taking their time in point out the numerous consistencies. Mostly due to today being 9/11 and not wanting to be overly political I suspect. But I also think that they want this to linger as long as possible because the longer it does, the more questions that come up and the harder it is for Danny boy to deny his complicity in this forgery of epic proportions!

CBS falls for Kerry campaign’s fake memo

Now MARK STEYN of there Chicago Sun-Times has entered the frey by directory calling the memos FAKE!

To my knowledge, this is the first MSM major newspaper columnist to call them fake (someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

Power Line has some additional comments to the story itself.

I simply cannot understand holding on to something so obviously false. The documents are fake, President Bush served honorably, get over it already! I will even be generous and say Senator Kerry serviced honorably.

As I told a friend this morning, I am not the least bit interested in what either man did during Vietnam – I AM, however, going to judge them both on their respective records in public service to their Country. In that contest, the President is the clear winner to any clear-thinking person.

Just an FYI for you extreme left-wing nuts: Clear-thinking people don’t pray to Michael Moore.

Never Forget 9/11/01

In Memorium

On this third anniversay of the September 11 attacks on the U.S., we should not let ourselves fall back into that mindset that told us we were invincible.

Sons, daughters, Moms, and Dads are figting today to ensure we do not fall back. Remember them, remember that people are trying to kill them and us, and most of all, remember those that have given their lives so we can remain free.
